A free English level test
In a few minutes you will know roughly where your English is. The test adapts to your answers: when you get them right, the next questions are harder; when you don’t, they are easier. You see your result straight away.
- Only 10 to 20 questions
- Levels A1 to C2 of the Common European Framework (CEFR)
- Your answers stay in your browser

Take your time
The test is not timed, so take as long as you need. For each sentence, choose the word or form that fits the gap. If you are not sure, choose “I don’t know”: your result will be more accurate than if you guess.
The test is loading. If the questions do not appear, JavaScript is probably switched off in your browser. I will gladly find out your level at a trial lesson instead: Check your level at a trial lesson
Your indicative level
Not yet A1
English is still new to you, and that is fine: the test starts at A1. My English courses start at A2. At a trial lesson we will find out exactly where you are and agree on what comes next.
Check your level at a trial lessonA1 – Beginner
You understand simple everyday sentences, can introduce yourself and ask and answer basic questions when people speak slowly. My English courses start at A2. At a trial lesson we will find out exactly where you are and agree on what comes next.
Check your level at a trial lessonA2 – Elementary
You get by in everyday situations, in a shop, when travelling or on simple matters at work, and can describe your day in short sentences. At a trial lesson we will check your speaking too, and you will leave with a plan for what comes next.

You handle most situations when travelling and at work, write a simple e-mail and talk about experiences and plans. In a harder discussion you still search for words. At a trial lesson we will check your speaking too, and you will leave with a plan for what comes next.

Questions about the test
How accurate is the result?
The test is indicative. It checks grammar and vocabulary in short sentences, not speaking or listening. As a first estimate it works well. We will find your exact level, speaking included, at a trial lesson.
What do the levels A1 to C2 mean?
They are the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), which describes language skills across Europe. I teach English from A2 to C1.
- A1 – Beginner: you understand simple everyday sentences and can introduce yourself.
- A2 – Elementary: you get by in everyday situations, in a shop or when travelling.
- B1 – Intermediate: you handle most situations at work and when travelling and can write a simple e-mail.
- B2 – Upper intermediate: you speak fluently, follow meetings and can defend your opinion.
- C1 – Advanced: you express yourself precisely even in demanding situations at work and read between the lines.
- C2 – Proficient: you understand virtually everything you hear and read and can express fine shades of meaning.
How does the test work?
You get 5 questions of one level at a time, starting at B1. If you answer at least 3 correctly, the next ones are a level harder; otherwise a level easier. The test ends once it finds the edge of your level, after 10 to 20 questions.
Do you store my answers?
No. The test runs only in your browser; your answers are not sent anywhere and disappear when you close the page. All that reaches me is what you send yourself through the trial-lesson form.
Can I send the test to my colleagues?
Yes, just send them the link to this page. Each of them sees only their own result. For companies I test every employee at the start, and that is included in the price.
